Korean Skincare Routine: The K-Beauty Steps (Beginner's Guide)

Tonique coréen Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner, étape clé d'une routine K-beauty

The Korean skincare routine is as fascinating as it is intimidating: "10 steps", toners, essences, ampoules… In reality, a good K-beauty routine is built on a simple idea: cleanse gently, hydrate in light layers and protect every day. In this beginner's guide, we walk you through the essential steps, in the right order, and show you how to adapt your routine to your skin without overcomplicating things.

The philosophy behind the Korean routine

K-beauty focuses on prevention and on respecting the skin barrier. Rather than one very rich product, you layer several thin textures that absorb easily. Each product has a specific role and prepares the skin for the next one.

Good news: you don't have to follow 10 steps. To get started, 5 or 6 steps are enough. What matters most is consistency and choosing products suited to your skin type.

The steps of an evening K-beauty routine

1. Oil or balm cleanser

In the evening, the first step is to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum with an oil-based cleanser. Applied to dry skin, it melts away oily impurities, then emulsifies with water to rinse off without residue.

The Banila Co Clean It Zero Revitalizing balm, with its "sherbet" texture that turns into a light oil, is a great classic to start with.

2. Foam cleanser

This is the second half of the famous double cleanse. A water-based cleanser (foam or gel) removes remaining residue, sweat and impurities. Choose a gentle formula that doesn't leave your skin feeling tight.

The Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol foam combines heartleaf extract and 0.5% BHA for a gentle cleanse, ideal for combination skin. Browse all options in our cleansers collection.

3. Toner

Unlike the astringent lotions of the past, a Korean toner is first and foremost a hydrating step. It rebalances the skin after cleansing and helps it better receive the following products. Apply it with your hands by patting gently, or with a cotton pad.

Anua's Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner is one of the best-known toners in K-beauty, loved for its watery texture and soothing effect. To compare, see our toners collection.

4. Serum or ampoule

The serum is the "targeted" step of the routine: more concentrated in actives, it addresses a specific concern (radiance, blemishes, hydration, signs of ageing…). A few drops are enough.

For beginners, a versatile serum like the Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum Propolis + Niacinamide is a safe bet. Discover more textures in our serums collection.

5. Moisturiser

The moisturiser "seals in" the hydration from the previous steps and supports the skin barrier. Oily skin will prefer a light gel-cream, dry skin a richer texture.

The Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cream, with deep sea water and panthenol, suits all skin types, including sensitive skin. More choice in our moisturisers collection.

The morning routine: shorter, but essential

In the morning, there's no need to double cleanse again. A simple routine is enough:

  • Gentle cleanser, or just a rinse with water if your skin is dry or sensitive;
  • Toner to rehydrate;
  • Light serum (for example with vitamin C or niacinamide);
  • Light moisturiser;
  • Sunscreen, the last and most important step.

Sun protection: the non-negotiable step

In K-beauty, sunscreen is worn every day, even in winter and even in the city. Korean sunscreens are known for their lightweight textures that feel comfortable under makeup.

The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice & Probiotics SPF50+ has become a benchmark thanks to its creamy texture with no white cast. Compare formulas in our sunscreen collection.

"Bonus" steps to add later

Once your basic routine is in place, you can add, as you like:

  • An exfoliant once or twice a week to smooth skin texture;
  • A mask (sheet, clay, overnight) for an occasional boost;
  • An eye cream for this thinner area;
  • An essence between toner and serum for extra hydration.

Our tips for a successful first Korean routine

  • Introduce one product at a time, one or two weeks apart, to see how your skin reacts.
  • Apply from thinnest to thickest: toner, then serum, then cream.
  • Patch test on your neck or behind your ear before using a new active.
  • Be patient: give your skin a few weeks to get used to a new routine.
  • Adapt to the season: lighter textures in summer, richer ones in winter.

FAQ: Korean skincare routine for beginners

Do you really need 10 steps?

No. The 10-step routine is a concept, not a rule. Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen make up a complete and effective base for beginners.

In what order should you apply Korean skincare?

Products are generally applied from the most fluid texture to the thickest: cleanser, toner, essence, serum, cream, then sunscreen in the morning.

Is the Korean routine suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, as long as you choose gentle, soothing formulas and introduce products gradually. If in doubt, feel free to ask for advice in our shop.
